Are you suffering from Spinal Stenosis Symptoms?

Spinal Stenosis is a condition involving the narrowing of the spaces between the bones that house your spinal cord. This condition refers to the closing of a passage on your vertebrae, putting pressure on the nerves that run from your spine down to the arms and legs to supply blood. There is a pain in the neck (cervical spine) and lower back when there is a restriction in the flow of blood.

Spinal stenosis may not be noticeable but can be a serious condition if it is neglected. Muscle weakness, numbness, pain, and tingling sensations are some of the symptoms associated with this spine condition.

Types of Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis can be experienced in the lower back, called lumbar stenosis, and in the neck region, called cervical stenosis, or you can have both. The pressure on your bones and nerves mostly occur in the lumbar region.

Spinal Stenosis Signs and Symptoms

Stenosis may not be noticeable unless you feel numbness and weakness in both of the regions. The narrowing gives you cramps and pain in the arms and legs. For some cases, you can experience difficulty in bowel movement or you will sense some pain in the bladder region.

To put it simply, the following are signs that you have spinal stenosis:

  • Numb legs, arms, or feet
  • Weak muscles
  • Neck pain
  • Tingling sensation in feet and cramps in legs
  • Difficulty in bending, sitting, or standing

In any injury, we expect to have each pain associated with an underlying cause. People reaching middle age, around 50 and more, are more prone to having spinal stenosis. But it can also occur on younger people or for people who have encountered injury or accidents. Arthritis, for example, for older people mostly suffer from spinal stenosis as they have bigger bones and thicker ligaments that constrict the spaces allowed for the nerves.
